It’s been over two months since the three of us sat down at JJ Beans on Commercial Drive and decided to start a furniture company. The idea was brewing for a while. James and Harry knew each other from working together at Michael Green Architecture and where playing with the idea for months, while Matej worked in furniture design back in Europe.
The idea was sparked by the contest at IDS Vancouver called Prototype. We had three weeks to design and produce a furniture prototype to submit to IDS. We already knew what kind of furniture we wanted to make, the contest just speeded up the whole process.

Once we had our first piece of furniture (the Tea Table) and got accepted into IDS we decided to test the market. We started pre-orders for the table and asked our friends to share the word about it. In a week we’ve sold 5 tables. That gave us confidence to develop two more products – the Hon Shelf and the Tea Stool. We set up an impromptu photo studio in James’ workshop, took product shots and put everything on our website. By that time we’ve made enough pre-sales to buy material in bulk (at a more reasonable price) and start production.
The past weekend we’ve cut all the components and we are now putting them together. It’s so exciting to see everything coming together after we’ve put so much work and effort into design, communications and production.
There is nothing better than watching from a distance a product that just two months ago was an idea or a sketch on a paper and it’s now materialized in the physical word.
